Artist: Ken Owen Email: kenowen55@aol.com
Media: Oil, Bees Wax, Acrylics, Graphite, Colored Pencil, Pen and Ink
Ken Owen was born in Oklahoma and has lived in Midwest City, OK all of his life. Ken recently retired from General Motors where he had held a variety of positions. He was editor of publications for both GM and UAW. In that position, he was able to use his talents for cartooning, graphic design, and layout. Ken has been drawing since he first discovered as a child that a pencil would leave a mark on a piece of paper. He is mostly self-taught, though he studied the arts at several universities.
Ken works primarily in acrylics because of the fast drying time. He also enjoys working in oil and bees wax because of the texture and depth it gives a painting. On occasion, Ken works in pen and ink because he likes the fine detail that can be accomplished with that medium.
Ken said he has always been fascinated by the human face. "I see faces in everything. The face conveys the most powerful of emotions. Everything the heart feels: fear, hate, love, joy, envy, and pride are all revealed in the face.
"I am also fascinated by the human hand and use the image a lot in my work. Hands are a very powerful image for me because they are able to convey meaning and direction. The human hand is capable of such tenderness and unconditional love but at the same time has the potential for unrestrained violence."
"It is these thing coupled with creativity that allow man to touch God. I believe that the artist reaches closer to the heart of God than anyone else, for God is the original artist. He is the Creator of creativity. As Andre Gide said, 'Art is collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does, the better.' When I am lost in the process of creating, I feel as though I am holding hands with God, or rather He is directing my hands and guiding my thoughts. For me, it is truly a spiritual collaboration."
